The Mid-Florida Research and Education Center (MREC), part of the Institute for Food and Agricultural Sciences (IFAS), seeks an entry-level biological scientist to manage operations and physical infrastructure for field, and secondary greenhouse, research by MREC faculty. This research encompasses production and use of high-value horticultural plants, such as diverse landscape plants, medicinal species, and greenhouse (foliage, floriculture, and greens) crops. A secondary responsibility is managing MREC's demonstration low water landscape, including plant and irrigation maintenance, plant replacement, design updates, and interpretive outreach.
Field Research: Support MREC faculty to install and maintain field research. This will involve a functional understanding of field plot design to ensure experimental integrity, learn operation of sophisticated electronic equipment for measuring plant responses to experimental treatments, and data collection and processing. This person will need experience, or be willing to receive training, in irrigation installation and maintenance and particularly in irrigation scheduling with time clocks, well operation and maintenance, and operating field equipment such as tractors, mowers, and fork lifts.
Landscape Management: Manage and help interpret MREC front demonstration landscapes. Duties will include vegetation management (appropriate pruning and integrated weed control; obtain and keep current a pesticide applicator’s license); schedule irrigation, maintain system uniformity, and repair systems as needed; responsible for appropriate fertilization to maintain plant health and minimize leaching; implement integrated insect and disease control. This person will also exercise a high degree of creativity and latitude in initiating revisions to the landscape design, including selecting and replacing appropriate plant material and replanting as needed to maintain a sustainable, low input landscape.
Greenhouse Support: Serve as aid in back up for other technical support personnel by becoming familiar with general greenhouse operations, particularly irrigation, winterizing, spring start up, heating and cooling systems.
