Distance Education
Distance education is teaching and learning offered to students in remote locations, including their homes. Courses may be delivered synchronously (on a set schedule similar to on-campus courses) or asynchronously (on an open, flexible schedule). A distance course may include a requirement that students and instructors meet once or periodically in a physical setting.
Three types of instruction used at MREC include face-to-face, video conferencing, and web.
- Face-to-face: This type of course instruction is considered traditional. Classes generally meet once a week for a three hour block. Instruction is provided directly from the instructor in the classroom.
- Video conferencing: Lectures are broadcast across video links from remote locations. Classes are taught live and classroom interactions/discussion is possible through the use of microphones and video cameras. This is identical to a face-to-face instruction except that the instructor is physically in another location.
- Web: Course materials are placed online for students to take at their convenience from any location. This generally involves streaming video, graphics, audio, and chat groups. A computer and high-speed access is required. Course times are extremely flexible since instruction is pre-recorded.
